READ THE LETTER BELOW IF YOU WILL BE IN ROOM 17, OUR CLASSROOM.
Dear Incoming Fifth Grade Students,
Let me warn you. This will be a long letter so go grab a snack and make sure you have enough juice on your electronic device to be able to read through all this without the battery dying! I assure you that this will help you prepare to enter 5th grade and specifically, our classroom. I love being organized so this letter will have bold numbers to mark key ideas. Here's the first one.
1) Who were you and who do you want to be?
Fifth grade is a great time in your life when you get to decide who you truly want to be. Do you want to be the child that performs well on tests? Or perhaps the child that is most liked in class. Or maybe that child that brings smiles to everyone's faces. Whatever it is, you have the power to decide. What's even better is that you start off with a clean slate. So use this year as a launch pad to really develop into the person that your family, myself, and more importantly, yourself can be proud of.
2) "Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind, or forgotten."
That quote is from Lilo and Stitch! I like to have our classroom follow that quote and not because it's from an awesome cartoon, but because we are a family. Think about it. You will come to school around 8:00 and leave at 1:00. That's 5 hours a day. You are stuck with your classmates and myself for 5 days out of the week. So that's 25 hours in a week. Now, there's about 4 weeks in a month so that's 25 x 4 which is 100 hours. Now, we are in school for 10 months so 100 x 10 = 1,000 hours. We do have holidays, but we can't forget those long and horrible extended days! Let's make the best out of this 1,000 hours! Let's support and grow upon each other. Nobody will be left behind or forgotten. Remember that!
3) Life has rewards and consequences.
If you're still reading this then you're a rock star! Take a break and jump on your bed and rock the AIR GUITAR like you're performing live to thousands of people! Seriously, go do it. Even better, have your parents videotape it and email it to me ([email protected]). I'll promise you a candy bar if you do it. And don't be embarrassed or ashamed because YOLO. Sorry, I am too old to say that. Let's refocus. One of the most important thing that my father taught me and made me realize is that life has rewards and also consequences. I prefer to treat you with tough love. That's what my father called it. If you are doing amazing things like being kind, helping others, and just being that fantastic leader then you will be rewarded. What kind of reward? It doesn't matter does it? As long as YOU know that you're rocking it then that's all that matters. Making me proud is one of the best things you can do. It makes me remember you forever. Eternal greatness! Anyways, life also has consequences. Forgot to do your homework? Being rude to others? Didn't follow directions for the 12th time (you know who you are)? Well, you will have consequences and grow from them. Consequences are given because it helps you understand your mistakes and become a better person. Accept it and own up to it. Trust me, you'll mature and be happier with yourself. That happened to me. And now look at me. I am such an awesome human being. Ahh, life can't get better than this. Oh, by the way, I don't like excuses. Remember that!
4) Work hard and play hard.
In Room 17, we will work our butts off. We will have days when our brains will feel fried and done. We will have days where you guys will think to yourself, "Whyyyyyyyyyyy??!!! Someone save me! This is complete torture!" Life is a roller coaster. It has its up and downs and so does this classroom. We will have to work hard to get us to the next level. I have always been the type of person that wants to strive to be better everyday. My only competition in life is the one that is staring back at me in the mirror as I brush my teeth and dripping toothpaste foam on the side of my mouth. You MUST work hard to develop. Think about it. Where would Michael Jordan be if he quit basketball in high school? Where would Mr. Luu be if he didn't try in college? Where would YOU be if your parents didn't work hard to put a roof over your head? Those who work hard will reap the benefits. It's the American Dream. My brother came to the United States at 24 years old (my age). He knew no English and this prevented him from going to college and applying for any high paying jobs. What did he do? He saved all his money from working low end jobs to eventually bought a business. Where is he at now? He is living in Arkansas with his wife and three kids. He owns two properties and several cars. He is not "rich" as you would call it, but he is the American Dream. You MUST work hard for your dream. So I will expect this from you when school starts. But, let me promise you that we will have fun as well. There will be many times that we will laugh together. Sometimes it will be you guys laughing at me and sometimes it will be me laughing at you. We will enjoy parties and games to celebrate our success. We will play hard when the time is right. I promise you that.
This will be the end of the long and grueling letter. I am sorry that I put you through something so painful as reading that! I hope this hasn't be the only reading that you have completed over summer! Enjoy your last few weeks of summer and I plan on seeing you on the 14th. Yikes, it's approaching fast. By the way, I love technology and we will use a lot of it in class so feel free to bring your tablets, iphones, and other devices. It will be strictly used for educational purposes unless it's Fun Friday then we can have a little fun with them! Ahhhh! I can't wait to get to know you. I'm like a kid right before Christmas. That was an example of a simile. Remember that? No? Comparing two things with "like" or "as". Remember that!
Sincerely,
Phap T. Luu
P.S. Email me the video of you being a rockstar!
